Reasons for having business websites

There are so many benefits to having a website if you have your own business. Here are 7 of them:

1. Significant Market Expansion

Through the internet, you can break through local barriers and become accessible to not only any state, but any country in the world, and you are accessible to them 24 hours a day, seven days a week. This can significantly build up your customer base.

2. Much Lower Cost than Standard Print Advertising

You can reach a large audience with a smaller investment. If you put your internet address on your business card, your customer or potential customer can visit your website and get a very good idea of what your product or service about.

You can change the content on your website at will, keeping it fresh for those who visit your site more than once.

You can still use print advertising of course, but with a website there is a two way communication when you include a Contact Us page. The potential client can ask any questions or ask that you contact them through your contact page.

3. Your Site Allows You to be Semi-Available at all hours

Your site runs every day all day, allowing your clients to visit your site for the information they are looking for without waiting for your business to open.

4. Higher Level of Customer Satisfaction

Your website is a convenient way for clients to get information about you in the privacy of their office or home. Add to that the idea that you can feature valuable information on your site for your clients, and you’ve got a higher level of customer satisfaction.

5. Improve Your Company Credibility

Since many potential buyers use the internet to research any future purchases, your site gives you the opportunity to illustrate for your client what your company is about, and your high standards for service and customer satisfaction.

6. An Opportunity for Your Company to Grow

It is obvious that since you are reaching a much larger market, your company has the opportunity for growth. And occasionally, someone who visits your website may promote your business by word of mouth.

7. You Can Put Your Best Foot Forward

You can work out, in advance, the best approach to use on your website to entice your potential customer to contact you. There are no variables or mistakes in the presentation, as there may be in a “live” sales presentation.

A website is an advantage to a brick and mortar business. It makes you more available to your potential customers, and can give your enterprise a certain amount of credibility before you have the first conversation with your potential client.

Client to Business Via Website

Create a Great Web Presence so They Can Find You

Without directions and instructions, how are your clients going to find you? Image source.

You’ve built a website, done some basic SEO work, and now you’re stuck waiting for clients to come to you. The only problem: they aren’t coming.

A basic website is just that – a basic website, and it’s unlikely to attract any valuable clients to your business. While people may stumble across is from a bizarre and unrelated search result, it’s very unlikely that you’ll gain any valuable clients without your own client-driven and well-marketed website.

Before you create your long-term business website, look at the people who are getting all of the jobs you’d like. Even if you’re not at their level currently, look at their websites and observe what it is that’s pulling in new clients week after week. For example, if it’s conversion-driven sales copy, hire a professional to write your page in an appealing and buyer-friendly style.

You can only imitate for so long, but as a starting strategy, it’s a good way to gain exposure and influence. When you’re dead set on getting clients to come to you, look at the people who are inundated with clients and see what they’re doing right. Reverse engineering can help as a beginner, and could end up being the difference between 10 great long-term clients and 10 frustrating one-time clients.

Ask Your Current Clients for Referrals

Sometimes a single phone call from a client is enough to land a major contract. Image source.

After a few months of freelancing as a designer, you’ll quickly build up a group of designers that come back to you for orders often. From weekly logos to frequent entire website designs, some designers are inundated with orders from one or two of their best clients, and completely free of work from anyone else.

This is the type of situation where you have to look at the advantages you have, not the potential disadvantages that only having a small stack of clients causes. Contact your best clients with an honest and important email, asking them if they know of anyone else that would be interested in working with you.

This situation can be taken to extremes, sometimes with very profitable effects. Want to really encourage your clients to get their friends working with you? Create an affiliate or referral program for your design agency, and convince past clients to bring in new ones for a small commission, discount on their next order, or special bonus. Incentives go a long way online, and sometimes something as minor as a free blog theme could bring in a new major client.

Advertise Yourself Strategically

When it comes to advertising, it’s all about strategy and placement.

PPC (pay-per-click) advertising can be worthwhile for service businesses, especially large service businesses that can afford to cater to a pool of clients at once. However, most PPC advertising platforms are used in a non-strategic manner, causing lost ROI and wasted time. From banner ad mistakes to on-page advertising that simply isn’t effective, even minor advertising mistakes can end up costing some serious money.

The best way to advertise is to go where your clients are. A great design blog or community might expose you to thousands of new designers, but it’s not the type of place that’s likely to be brimming with potential clients. Advertise strategically to target the most clients, and the most valuable clients, with every pick.

For example, a simple text advertisement on a small business forum could be worth much more than a large full-page post on a design marketplace. Why? Because an advertisement specifically tailored to small businesses will bring in hundreds of entrepreneurs and local business owners that are interested in working with you, whereas a marketplace posting will only ever bring in the occasional client, as the level of choice is hugely increased.

Don’t just advertise; advertise strategically for optimum clients.

Master the Cold Email Approach

Local clients will often like to meet in person, so get your suit and tie ready. Image source.

It’s surprising how effective an email marketing campaign can be for service business owners.

Relax, there’s no need to spam anyone, but targeting individual businesses and community companies with the offer of design services can be quite worthwhile. Many businesses want to be online, but simply don’t know how to move their business there. As a designer, you can approach them with a deal in mind, limiting their barrier to entry and maximizing your local business profits.

This works best with local clients, and for some designers it can seem like quite a mission. Most of us internet-based providers aren’t used to working with offline businesspeople, so get ready for a few changes.

Email as casually as you’d like, but expect in-person meetings, discussions over lunch, and more than a few questions for a large contract. For some, this might be too much work, while for others it presents a lucrative opportunity.

Partner With Other Designers and Design Firms

Sometimes even the unlikeliest of partnerships can work in your favor.

There are going to be times in your life when scheduling gets completely out of control. Clients will stack up, website design requirements will tally well off the page, and work will become a major headache for you. Then again, there will also be times when clients simply aren’t contacting you, leaving you completely free of work, and unfortunately, free of income.

Realize that every service business experiences these changes from time to time, and while many don’t adapt, many others do.

If you want a more constant flow of long-term clients, why not team up with another designer or design firm? You’ll be free to take care of their overflow when things get rough, and they’ll be available to take care of yours. While not a perfect solution for long-term clients, this approach can minimize downtime and keep your schedule smooth even through low-client patches.

What finally look at web designer

If you’re building a website or want to update your existing website and you decide to hire a designer to help you can quickly get overwhelmed. There are thousands of Web designers. How do you decide what makes one designer better than another designer?

Experience Isn’t Everything

Most people will tell you that the most important thing is experience. A designer who doesn’t have a lot of experience, they’ll tell you, can’t give you the quality that an experienced designer can. I don’t agree. While experience can be useful, it can also be a drawback. Just because a designer has less experience doesn’t mean that he or she can’t build a beautiful site for you.

Before you base your decision solely on how many sites they’ve built or how long they’ve been in business, think about this:

  • Many long-time designers are stuck in their habits and might not be willing or able to give you a cutting edge website (if that’s what you want).
  • Younger designers are more likely to have gone to school to get a Web design degree. While this isn’t vital either, it does tell you that this person has academic knowledge that an older designer might only have through practice.

Take Note: If a designer says they’ve been building websites since before 1995, they are almost definitely exaggerating. When I started working on the Web in 1995, very very few people had even heard of the Web, let alone had set up a business. I was working at an Internet company, which is the only reason I was involved with it at that time.

Ask to See Their Portfolio

While experience might not be important, having a good portfolio is. You shouldn’t be as concerned with whether the portfolio is made up of live sites, so much that the examples show diversity and range for the designer. Ask to see the portfolio online so that you can see how the websites they’ve built actually work. This is especially important if you’re looking for a designer to build any type of interactivity for your website.

Some people will tell you that the way the potential Web designer’s personal site looks is a good measure of how good a designer they will be. But I disagree with this too. While I do think having a good Web design business site is important. I don’t think that it’s a good indicator of how well they would design your site. Most designers design their business site when they’re not working on paying jobs. And if they have tons of time to modify their business site, then they don’t have a lot of experience, do they? But they might have a good portfolio. So you have to judge for yourself.

What Skills Do They Have or Offer

To assess this in a Web designer, you need to know what you need on your website. This can be hard. But some skills that they should definitely know include:

  • HTML
  • CSS
  • JavaScript

And it would be good if they know or can bring in as a sub-contractor someone who knows PHP, Flash, Ajax, SEO, content writing, and graphics creation.

The best way to assess this is to ask them.

Take Note: While it is remotely possible that one person will know all of those technologies, it is unlikely that they will know them all well. If they tell you they don’t like JavaScript, so they sub-contract all JavaScript work out to someone else, you should consider this a bonus. They know their weaknesses and have figured out a way to work around them.

A’s:

Is it really that important to have a web site?

Establishing you online presence can greatly enhance your existing business because you are creating additional income. Look at it as a “branch” which has a minimal maintenance to profit ratio as compared to a “brick and mortar” business.

Creating your new online business for your product, service or other idea is much more cost effective than establishing a business in the “real world”. You save much more money from initial outlay, to overhead and maintenance cost having your business on the web.

How high will my maintenance costs and other overhead be?

Your maintenance and overhead cost varies depending o whether you maintain your site yourself or procure our services. It also depends on what business model you select or is appropriate for your unique situation. Under some circumstances your monthly expenditure for your online presence could end up being as low as $20.00, even less.

In most cases, once your online presence is established, most functions of your site are automatic incurring zero cost. Depending on your business, this also can save you large amounts of money on personnel, which you will no longer need.

Can I select any combination of services I want?

Can I start with some things and add others later?

Yes. We understand that time are tough. Establishing your online business is a step by step procedure we can tackle at your pace. Can you teach me how to design my own site?

Yes, we can. There is no reason why you could not learn to create your own web site. Though, it may take you much longer to establish your online presence. You therefore may want to consider having your first site designed professionally. Then learn web design at your leisure.

Can I manage my site myself?

Of course. As long as you are willing to be disciplined and take the time you can manage your own site quite easily.

Will you have total control over my site?

Unlike some designers, who provide your hosting and could make it quite difficult for you to maintain your site yourself, we set you up with your own, independent host over which you can have total control.

Do you search for an appropriate domain name for my site?

Yes, because selection the right domain name for your business is of the upmost importance. Much depends on the right domain name, such as search engine ranking and name recognition.
Back To Top Details

Do you provide hosting/domain registration?

Of course. We take care of all those details for you making sure you get and keep total control in the process.

What will be my initial financial investment?

Your initial investment generally covers your domain name registration, your hosting and your site design. This may also include graphics design, copywriting and other individual need your online business may require.

Are there high operation cost associated with doing business online?

Generally, no. Most small online business operators experience very low operating costs, often limited to their monthly hosting payment.

Do you offer a payment plan?
